Puttabong Cottage

Once the home of a British tea planter, Puttabong Cottage is a heritage bungalow set in the heart of Darjeeling’s historic Puttabong Tea Estate — the first tea estate established in the region. Now part of the amã Stays & Trails collection, the cottage retains its old-world charm with classic colonial architecture, wooden interiors, and sweeping views of the Kanchenjunga.

Dating back to the 19th century, the bungalow reflects Darjeeling’s colonial past and its deep-rooted connection to tea cultivation. Surrounded by terraced gardens and timeless landscapes, Puttabong Cottage offers a quiet window into the region’s storied legacy, where history and natural beauty coexist in understated elegance.

This tea tour is limited to just 12 guests, ensuring an intimate and personalized experience, with all accommodation falling under our Premium category. Guests stay in six thoughtfully appointed suites at the Puttabong bungalow. Each suite features hand-embroidered bed linens, an attached balcony with stunning Kanchenjunga views, and a bathroom with an old-style bathtub and/or walk-in rain shower with hot and cold running water, stocked with complimentary Darjeeling Green Tea toiletries. Additional comforts include air conditioning, fans, hair dryers, and Wi-Fi — blending heritage charm with modern luxury.

Puttabong Tea Estate

Established in 1852, Puttabong Tea Estate holds the distinction of being the first tea estate in Darjeeling. Nestled in the Himalayan foothills, it played a pioneering role in introducing and cultivating tea in the region under British colonial rule. Originally known as Tukvar Tea Estate, it became a benchmark for quality and innovation in tea production, laying the foundation for Darjeeling’s global reputation.

Spanning thousands of acres of lush, sloping terrain, the estate is renowned not only for its fine teas but also for its historical significance. Generations of skilled workers and planters have shaped its legacy, and its connection to early tea pioneers — including Dr. Archibald Campbell — marks it as a cornerstone of Darjeeling’s tea heritage.
